Artist's presentation

 

Ruta Butkute's video work “Building 403 & Tree 187” was recorded at Governors Island, New York, in the autumn of 2012, during the Swing artists’ residency provided by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The video captured an abandoned historical building on the island, number 403, and a tree in the park, number 187. 

Her short experimental film functions as her visual thoughts and experiences on Governors Island. She refers to her use of the medium as “sculptural video”: she looks for physical forms and textures in her surroundings which are open for interaction and have possible transformative qualities. A sense of physicality and a continuous tension between architectural and natural forms are characteristic of these works. 

Butkute sees her videos as a research on the visual relation between functional and free (non-functional) form. Through often simple transformations of the gaze, a sense of the poetic language of space is revealed. Translating form into form, the work calls to mind Rancière's “poetic labour of translation”. In his thoughts on learning, Rancière describes how one can learn an entire language by only knowing one poem: “By observing and comparing one thing with another, a sign with a fact, a sign with another sign.” 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rūtos Butkutės video darbas “Building 403 & Tree 187” nufilmuotas Governors saloje, Niujorke 2012 metų rudenį, menininkei rezidentuojant Swing, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council residentūroje. Video medžiagoje užfiksuotas apleistas pastatas, numeriu - 403, ir parko medis - 187. 

Trumpametražinis ekspermentinis filmas funkcionuoja kaip menininkės vaizdinės mintys ir patirtys iš Governors salos. Menininkė pavadina savo filmą,-”skulptūriniu filmu”, ieškodama fizinių formų ir tekstūrų aplinkoje, kurios gali sąveikauti ir transformuotis. Fizinių formų pajutimas ir besitęsianti įtampą tarp architektūrinių formų ir gamtinių elementų charakterizuoja šį darbą.

Butkutė analizuoja vizualų santykį tarp funkcinių ir ne-funkciunalių formų ir tarsi jį supainioja. poetinė kalba įprasminama fizinėse erdvėse per filmavimo techniką. Vienos formos santykis su kita, primena filosofo Ranciere's “poëtic labour of translation” konceptą. Savo mintyse jis apibūdina, kaip galima išmokti kalbą, žinant tik vieną poemą. Stebint ir sugretinant vieną daiktą su kitu, ženklą su faktu, ženklą su ženklu.
