Bob Eikelboom is a painter who takes the painterly process as a starting point for his practice. He tends to base himself on the well known areas of art history, but manoeuvres mainly on the unknown terrain of his artistic process. Bob Eikelboom experiments with the boundaries of fundamental painting, aiming to transform and bend them until they eventually can be pushed.
Even though Eikelboom mainly works on a flat surface, the changeability of form characterizes his work. In Bob Eikelboom’s oeuvre the canvas comes in many shapes and forms: curved and straight, rectangular and round. His most recent works are based on the versatility of colour and form within the monochrome painting. Bob Eikelboom considers the monochrome as a sanctuary for painting: a blank ground on which the artist is given the freedom to adapt and change the surface during his process, eventually being able to shape it into any desired form. The transformations of canvas and paint come together in his ‘pearls’. Here, Eikelboom refers to the popular hip-hop culture and tuned cars, where meaning, value and aesthetic appearance likewise exist on the glistening surface. As with shining vehicles, the viewer interacts with the painterly object within a single glance. By using car paint and a pinch of bravado, Eikelboom incorporates this dynamic into his paintings.

Bob Eikelboom is een schilder die het schilderkunstige proces als uitgangspunt neemt voor zijn werk. Hij baseert en inspireert zich daarbij graag op de bekende gebieden uit de kunstgeschiedenis, maar begeeft zich in zijn werkproces veelal op onbekend terrein. Bob Eikelboom experimenteert met de grenzen van de fundamentele schilderkunst, transformeert ze en verbuigt ze totdat ze verlegd kunnen worden.
Ook al werkt Eikelboom voornamelijk op het platte vlak, zijn werk wordt gekenmerkt door veelzijdigheid. Het canvas kent vele vormen en gedaanten in het oeuvre van Bob Eikelboom: gebogen en recht, rechthoekig en rond. In zijn meest recente werken zijn de veranderlijkheid van vorm en kleur in het monochroom het uitgangspunt. Bob Eikelboom beschouwt het monochroom als vrijplaats voor de schilderkunst: een blanco ondergrond waarop de kunstenaar de vrije hand krijgt en de veranderlijkheid van zijn proces elke gewenste vorm kan aannemen. De transformatie van canvas en verf komen samen in zijn ‘parels’. Eikelboom verwijst hier naar de populaire hip-hop cultuur en getunede auto’s, waar betekenis, waarde en uiterlijk vertoon zich eveneens aan het glimmende oppervlak bevinden. Zoals met glanzende auto’s verhoudt de toeschouwer zich in één oogopslag tot het schilderkunstig object. Met enige bravoure verwerkt Eikelboom deze dynamiek in het platte vlak en schildert het monochroom met autolak.
