Long-term researches based on precise studies and reflecting on vulnerable aspects of our society and modifications in identity are presented in an objective, yet sensitive manner by fine artist Lilla Khoór. In her works, she deals with contemporary manifestations of historical traumas, the system of symbols and their transformations, and issues of multiculturalism in our globalized world. In each case, she examines the malleability of remembrance and representation, thereby exposing the distortedness and also the questionable truth value of political and social contexts.
’I Thought I Missed the Place’ is a group of works that she started during her 2011 Gasworks residency in London, and then developed further for the biennale. The piece is based on confessions by migrant women, and aims to scrutinize forced resettlement and make the viewer reflect on the phenomenon through narratives built from actual experiences. Apart from the interviews recorded in London, the installation also features drawings, graphics based on scientific observation, factual studies, sociological diagrams and illustrations, and highlights the uncomfortable, often undisclosed differences between personal stories and generalizing representations.
How can female emancipation fully blossom in a new environment? What are the motives and goals that make women build a new life under new conditions, in a new country, a new culture and in a new language? What are the physical and psychological corollaries? How likely is it that integration can happen and to what extent? The artist makes us face these delicate, individual issues that are relevant anywhere in Europe, be it from the perspective of the migrant or the receiving community.

Khoór Lilla a társadalmunk kényes és kényelmetlen jelenségeire és leginkább identitásunk módosulásaira reagáló, f˝oként precíz tanulmányokon alapuló hosszabb távú kutatásokat objektíven, de mindannyiszor érzékenyen, a m˝uvészet nyelvén bemutató képz˝om˝uvész. Munkáiban a történelmi traumák korunkbeli megnyilvánulásaival, jelképrendszerekkel és azok átalakulásaival, illetve a globalizációs világunk kínálta multikulturalizmus kérdésköreivel foglalkozik. Minden esetben a reprezentáció és az emlékezés képlékenységét teszi vizsgálatának tárgyává és így pellengére helyezi a politikai és szociális kontextusok eltorzulását és egyben valóságtartalmukat is.
A biennáléra újragondolt, 2011-ben a londoni Gasworks rezidenciája alatt elkezdett m˝uegyüttes, az “Azt gondoltam eltévesztettem a helyet…” migráns n˝ok vallomásain alapul és célja a kényszer˝u helyváltoztatás jelenségét körbejárni, valós élményekre épül˝o narratívákon keresztül elgondolkodtatni a néz˝ot. Az installációban az angliai f˝ovárosban felvett interjúk mellett rajzok, tudományos megfigyeléseken alapuló grafikai elemek, tárgyilagos felmérések és szociológiai ábrák, grafikonok jelennek meg, amelyek izgalmasan ütköztetik a személyes történetek és az általános megfogalmazások kényelmetlen, sokszor eltussolt különbségeit.
Hogyan lehetséges a n˝oi emancipáció kiteljesedése egy új környezetben? Milyen okok és milyen célok késztetik arra ˝oket, hogy új országban, új közegben, egy másik nyelven és kultúrában építse fel újra életét? Milyen lelki és fizikai változásokkal jár mindez és mennyire valószín˝usíthet˝o és milyen fokú lehet a beilleszkedés? Ezekkel a kényes, individuális kérdésekkel szembesít bennünket a szerz˝o, amelyek bárhol Európában relevánsnak számítanak, akár a migráns személy, akár a befogadó környezet szemszögéb˝ol nézve.
