Courtesies, proper clothing and standard situations give Lia Mast an uncomfortable feeling. She can’t find a pose in a world where everything seems to be posed. This feeling is for her the inducement to make her work. If the posed version of yourself doesn’t feel like yourself, who is it that you are then?

Lia asks herself how a personality comes about. In what way are you shaped by your experiences and how much control do you have over this? How much do you need to protect yourself in order to stay yourself? In her work she discusses the personal, without it being assignable present.

Lia makes self-portraits. She captures herself in intuitive poses in safe spaces. She’s trying to free herself from the accepted forms in which we try to capture each other. Psychologically approaching of the own person, is the most accurate definition of a self-portrait for her. A self-portrait is a play of roles, you instantly form the second person. This doesn't stop with the literal self-portrait. A self-portrait for her includes also objects and texts, it goes beyond being an image of yourself, it’s the image you form of yourself. Sometimes you have to say something out loud to see if it’s right. 

‘I make a dress, two pieces of white fabric cover my body. I stitch them firm around me. Create the dress by stitching the seams with words. A physical imaginary dress. A self-portrait without me.’

 

 

 

 

Beleefdheden, gepaste kledij en standaard situaties geven Lia Mast een ongemakkelijk gevoel. Ze weet zich geen houding aan te meten binnen een wereld waarin alles aangemeten lijkt te zijn. Dit gevoel is voor haar de aanleiding om haar werk te maken. Als de aangemeten versie van jezelf niet voelt als jezelf, wie ben je dan?

Lia vraagt zich af hoe een persoonlijkheid tot stand komt. Hoe je ervaringen je vormen en hoeveel controle je hierover hebt. Hoe goed moet je jezelf beschermen om jezelf te kunnen blijven? Ze bespreekt in haar werk het persoonlijke, zonder dat het aanwijsbaar aanwezig is. 

Lia maakt zelfportretten. Ze legt zichzelf vast in intuïtieve houdingen in veilige ruimtes. Ze probeert zichzelf los te maken van de geaccepteerde vormen waarin we elkaar proberen te omlijnen. Psychologisch benaderen van de eigen persoon, is voor haar de beste definitie van een zelfportret. Een zelfportret is een spel van rollen, je bekijkt jezelf via jezelf. Je vormt meteen die andere persoon. Dit stopt niet bij het letterlijke zelfportret. Een zelfportret vormt voor haar ook objecten en teksten, het gaat verder dan een afbeelding van jezelf, het is het beeld dat je over jezelf vormt. Soms moet je iets hardop zeggen om te kunnen voelen of het klopt.

‘Ik maak een jurk, twee stukken witte stof bedekken mijn lichaam. Ik stik ze vast om me heen. Creëer de jurk door de naden vast te stikken met woorden. Een fysieke denkbeeldige jurk. Een zelfportret zonder mij.’
