Song is about waiting and wandering in the city, or rather, in a railway station; the wandering of a gaze, rendered by image scraps and life moments in an experimental processing.
For the film Song, I had to make the choice of documenting daily life, eluding all forms of plot in an attempt to capture these “hollow” moments, allowing the eye to freely nest within the image, with a very specific purpose: feeling and conveying feeling through an “instant of composition” process, weaving together disjointed fragments as the witnesses of a state of mind, of a reality I wanted to react to.
In short, it’s like finding some beauty in the daily events taking place under our very eyes. Looking for a certain beauty, some poetry in the ordinary life, with a view to highlighting contrasts of events in the mundane.
I wanted to provide a transcript for a wandering of some sort, for the temporary solitude sometimes encountered in daily urban life. Using landscape as a state of feeling.
I wanted abstractions, shapes in motion and colors, with the deliberate intention of not telling anything in particular, but rather of conveying an internal state revealing itself through shape, light, color and music.
Through my cinematographic approach, I wanted to intertwine two notions that I find interesting and essential:
- Firstly, the filmic approach of a documentary maker, consisting of immersing oneself into reality. This immersion naturally comprises a subjective point of view, carried through my eyes.
- Secondly, the experimental processing of images which incorporates this subjectivity while introducing a space, a window allowing the viewer to become the actor of this reality.
