Equipped with her permissive camera, Justine Pluvinage gathers testimonies from people who carry secrets that have profoundly contributed to forging their identity. On contact with her works we remember the funny installation Secrets for Sale by the Swiss artist Élodie Pong where each person alone in front of the camera was invited to reveal the secret of their choice, or again the films of ethnographic love, such as I shot my love by Tomer Heymann or No Sex Last Night by Sophie Calle. Exploring “what is enormous and moreover invisible”, Justine Pluvinage’s documentary films verge on voyeurism without ever crossing its border. Because what she is looking for is not as much the persistence of the trauma as the capacity of her subjects to do with; what she records, it is less the narrative of their memories than their resilience in the present.

In the first portraits of women she created between 2006 and 2009, we discover in particular Catherine, filmed with static shots in the process of getting dressed while her voice talks about her attempt at regaining freedom and photos from her personal album of ten years spent in present are inserted, in which the details of the context betray the surprisingly joyous poses. The video Le dernier mot [The Last Word](2009) interweaves the words of five women who, supporting the filmmaker tell of their experience of death, their own or that of those close to them. The great proximity the artist maintains with her subjects passes by the camera’s infiltration into their domestic universe and the adapting of its rhythm to the one she is filming. Thanks to the setting aside offered by the area of representation, the characters allow themselves to give birth to painful words.

In November, Justine Pluvinage proposes the accomplishment of fantasies that had remained unfulfilled until then, such as the desire of a young man to dress up as a female prostitute to give voice to silent minorities, for the duration of an opera aria under the bridges. Freed of all moral judgment, willingly flirting with the pathetic, Justine Pluvinage’s video camera acts as a trigger and container for exceeding the self. It is not surprising that she has swapped, through the necessity to unravel the thread of the discourse, her original photographic technique for video. It is then in the dissociation of the image and sound (most of the time she edits the narrations as voiceover) that she deepens the division, allows the passage from me to us.
This process is especially present in the Mirifique series of videos made in collaboration with the actress and singer Anaïs Delmoitiez where she freely combines images recorded in Rome and the narration of her dreams.

Pushing the logic of fusion of art and life in her entrenchments, it is her own intimacy that she involves when she goes to New York, video camera on her shoulder, with two aims in mind: “to film and to fuck”. It is that one does not go without the other when she gathers on the pillow the post coital confessions of her lovers.

Munie de sa caméra permissive, Justine Pluvinage recueille les témoignages de personnes porteuses de secrets ayant profondément contribué à forger leur identité. Au contact de ses œuvres, on se rappelle la drôle d’installation Secrets for Salede l’artiste suisse Élodie Pong où chacun seul face à la caméra était invité à livrer le secret de son choix, ou encore les films d’amour ethnographiques, tels que I shot my love de Tomer Heymann ou No Sex Last Night de Sophie Calle. Explorant « ce qui est énorme et pourtant invisible», les vidéos documentaires de Justine Pluvinage frôlent le voyeurisme sans jamais passer sa frontière. Car ce qu’elle va chercher n’est pas tant la persistance du traumatisme que la capacité de ses sujets à faire avec ; ce qu’elle enregistre, c’est moins le récit de leurs souvenirs que leur résilience au présent.

Dans les premiers portraits de femmes qu’elle élabore entre 2006 et 2009, on découvre notamment Catherine, filmée en plan fixe en train de s’habiller, tandis que sa voix relate sa tentative de reconquête de liberté et que s’insèrent des photos issues de son album personnel de dix années passées en prison, dans lesquelles les détails du cadre trahissent les poses étonnamment joyeuses. La vidéo Le dernier mot (2009) entremêle quant à elle la parole de cinq femmes qui, à l’appui de la vidéaste, relatent leur expérience de la mort, la leur ou celle de proches. La grande proximité que l’artiste entretient avec ses sujets passe par l’infiltration de la caméra dans leur univers domestique et l’adaptation de son rythme à celui qu’elle filme. Grâce à la mise à distance qu’offre l’espace de représentation, les personnes s’autorisent à accoucher d’une parole douloureuse.

Dans November, Justine Pluvinage propose l’accomplissement de fantasmes restés jusqu’alors inassouvis, tel que la volonté de ce jeune homme de se travestir en prostituée pour, le temps d’un chant d’opéra sous les ponts, redonner voix aux minorités muettes. Débarrassée de tout jugement moral, et flirtant volontairement avec le pathétique, la caméra de Justine Pluvinage se constitue en déclencheur et réceptacle des dépassements de soi. Pas étonnant qu’elle ait troqué, par nécessité de dérouler le fil du discours, sa pratique photographique d’origine contre la vidéo. C’est alors dans la dissociation de l’image et du son (elle remonte la plupart du temps les récits en voix off) qu’elle creuse l’écart et permet de passer du «je» au «nous».

Ce processus est particulièrement présent dans la série de vidéos Mirifique, réalisée en collaboration avec la chanteuse et comédienne Anaïs Delmoitiez, où elle combine librement des images enregistrées à Rome et le récit de ses rêves.

Poussant dans ses retranchements la logique de fusion de l’art et de la vie, c’est sa propre intimité qu’elle met en jeu quand elle part à New York caméra à l’épaule, deux objectifs en tête: «filmer et baiser». C’est que l’un ne va pas sans l’autre quand elle recueille sur l’oreiller les confessions postcoïtales de ses amants.
