A man drops his umbrella on the station concourse. He is hoarse, his glands swollen and his lips cracked.
Two miles away in an abattoir a cow is shot with a bolt gun and trussed up by a chain tied to its back legs. Its tongue lolls from its dead mouth and drips with saliva.
A flock of geese is flying over the train tracks, west towards England. The wind is blowing their bird calls far into the hills. The train clacks on the track, beating a steady rhythm.
In a second class carriage, a woman is watching an old Le Carré television serialisation on her laptop. The screen shows Alec Guinness sitting with a girl in a Swiss sanatorium. She is agitated, deranged.
Sitting behind the woman, the man coughs while searching in his bag for a paracetamol. He has a headache now. He has been watching the television show through a gap between the two seats in front
of him. He can’t hear the characters speak. The woman is wearing headphones.
The woman switches from the television show to her internet browser. It’s displaying the BBC news. Without a glance, she switches to Hotmail. 24 new messages.
24 nouveaux messages.
