Artist presentation
I first met young artist Mariana Sampaio during her college years. More than her work characteristics, which are yet maturing, still waiting as they are for all the equations life will ask it to solve in the future, I was stunned by her will power and work capacity. As it is normal during this period, I and my colleagues had the task to show her different paths to walk, books to read, artists to see, lines of thought to pursue. Mariana, thirsty to learn and know, absorbed everything. She never showed to have that fear so common amongst young artists of someone else’s opinion, of showing what she was doing, of facing, finally, the public´s critical judgment.
And the work she has been putting together shows this young ability of exploring all the painting possibilities, in the sense that painting is made of colour and form on a support – which may, or not, be two-dimensional. Mariana Sampaio’s painting is a constant provocation of these three elements, either denying or assuming that two-dimensionality, either joining saturated colour with black or white. Glass technique, which she also learned, allowed her to pursue further this research. And very recently light effects photography brought to her work the historical concept of representation in painting. Step by step, this young artist never ceases to surprise us.

Tomei contacto com a obra de Mariana Sampaio, artista muito jovem, durante a sua formação universitária. Mais do que as características da obra em si, que necessariamente está ainda em maturação e espera por conseguinte todas as equações que a vida lhe pedirá para resolver no futuro, surpreendeu-me a sua força de vontade e capacidade de trabalho. Como é habitual durante esse período, coube-me a mim, professora, e aos meus colegas, abrir-lhe caminhos, indicar-lhe artistas, leituras, pistas de reflexão. Tudo a Mariana absorveu, sedenta de saber e de aprender. Nunca mostrou possuir o receio, tão comum entre jovens artistas que começam a sua carreira, da opinião de outrém, de mostrar o que fazia, de se submeter, enfim, ao juízo crítico do público.
E a obra que tem vindo a construir revela esta capacidade tão jovem de explorar todas as potencialidades da pintura, no sentido em que esta é feita de cor e forma sobre um suporte – que pode, ou não, assumir a bidimensionalidade. A pintura de Mariana Sampaio é uma constante provocação destes três elementos, ora negando essa bidimensionalidade, ora assumindo-a, ora conjugando a cor saturada com o preto e o branco. A técnica do vidro, que também aprendeu, permitiu-lhe a certo momento levar mais longe esta pesquisa. E, muito recentemente, a fotografia de efeitos de luz trouxe para o seu corpo de trabalho a convocação da representação na história da pintura. Passo a passo, esta jovem artista não pára de nos surpreender.
