Nowadays, there is no longer any need to discuss Shakespeare’s famous phrase “All the world's a stage”. Different branches of the social sciences analyze the importance and existence of everyday rituals and roles. Image creation has become one of the most important parts of advertising and the entertainment industry. Although we may agree with the necessity of everyday roles and rituals, they might become an object of criticism. But at least in our Western culture we can choose and adjust our social status and priorities. Eastern cultures commit to norms of religion and traditions. Though they may claim the right of choice, breaking basic rules and laws is another thing. Your gender determines your future and functional roles.
In Saudi Arabia, the word Kosha (“backdrop” in Arabic) designates a chair and a stage where the bride will be sitting during her wedding ceremony, where her husband comes to pick her up, and where she receives all greetings from ladies from both families (men and women are separated). This is the most important, most visible and most decorated place in a wedding or engagement.
There is a given condition for the work – it cannot depict people (according to Shariya law). But this can be seen as a positive aspect, since the attention focuses on the unity of composition and repetition. It gives clear hints of the rituals, contexts, values, culture, and taste of a society. The presence of real women might satisfy some kind of voyeuristic curiosity, but it would also eliminate any possibility of improvisation. Repetition and static composition gives your eye a chance to move through details and make your own conclusions, allowing a glimpse into the secret world of Saudi women.
