To be and not to be
Five chairs, a rubbish bin, a mirror, a few shelves, a fan hanging on the ceiling, two music-stands for the sheets, a grand piano facing the window. A typical classroom for practicing. It makes you frown, and you straighten your back. Feel the weight of those fingers. Listen to every note; after all, this is Bach.
Every work fosters certain expectations, as though we were anticipating unexpected variations on the strict but simple melodies of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in F Minor. But in this class somebody else’s works could be played. Jurgis Mačiūnas could even break the grand piano. While nothing is going on, anything can happen. It is just like sitting in the concert hall before a concert, a show or any other performance without knowing the program. You could have expected something else from this text, but you will receive an impulsive piece of writing whirling around the sculpture by Raimonda Sereikatė named “Round”.
rawing trajectories is one of the essential principles of the “act” of this sculpture: the words “whirling” and “round” define their direction. It is highly unlikely that somebody will not circle around this sculpture – its form infuses the object with mysticism, propels curiosity. Maybe this is the reason why, for a second, from a distance, it reminds us of a work by Rasa Juškevičiūtė named “Table” (2006), which to me has a whiff of Magritte’s surrealism. Maybe also because we are not able to see the whole work at a glance. And that is why there is an urge to check out whether there is anything else on the other side, if not because of the protruding shoes underneath the curtain, then at least because of the gap between the curtains, to have a peek what is going on the other side, where the taunting roar of the crowd’s voices comes from. Just like in a theater before a show or any other event. You can almost feel the anxiety of the wait floating around in the air. Sound and substance act like codes connected with the theater on the aesthetic level. The word théatron means “a place for performance” in Greek, and theasthai means “to look”; the components of this work are analogical – place + action. The curtain is the limit that defines the space. It is a little more difficult with the action. At this point, the attention shifts from the theatrical event (the show) towards the other side of the stage – towards something that is not the object of theater.
Once, my friend and I decided to go to the Opera and Ballet Theater to have some hot chocolate. We arrived during the break, which for us became a spectacle in itself. Looking at it from an outsider’s point of view, you can notice things like people walking around in circles in the lobby of the theater. This movement of masses frightens with its passivity. It looks at though it was controlled by some power, or to reference Foucault, maybe by the architecture of the building itself.
In this case we can say that the situation is reproduced. The viewers perform the same action as the audience of the theater, as they go around in circles, unable to decide what they expect from the sculpture.
That is why I started with Bach, and more specifically with expectations (they are an object of speculation in here). Maybe it is wise not to show what hides behind the curtain. Then it may become anything, and everybody will perceive it as they can imagine. It will be and it will not be – just like in the quantum mechanics example of Schrödinger’s cat.
