Gadget gone wrong.
“I am able to swim in life, but I am too heavy for this mystical hovering.”
Søren Kierkegaard, Fear and Trembling.
The image of a gadget that looks like a rosary gone wrong is a visual neologism which provides continuity with our tradition of impossible gadgets destined to wander forever through strange landscapes. We are talking about a tradition, by the way, that began in the 19th century thanks to, or maybe as the fault of, the difficult relationship between tradition and modernity or, to put it better, perhaps, between religion and technological secularisation. Beginning with The tale of cross-eyed Lefty from Tula and the steel flea by Nikolai Leskov and ending with Collodi’s unfortunate Pinocchio (both works published in 1881) – without forgetting forerunners as illustrious as The lead soldier, written by Andersen in 1838 – these are always stories featuring alienated man-made gadgets contemplating reality from their privileged isolation – flea, puppet or, in the latter instance, soldier – inviting us to review our version of the world with that rare “mystical hovering” ability coveted by Kierkegaard (a contemporary of all of them, of course).
Adrià Ciurana is not a nineteenth-century artist but, to a certain point, he continues to experience that old tension between the sacred sphere – without a body – and mechanical corporality as something very real (in the manner, to make ourselves clear, of La Mettrie). His “challenging rosaries” speak to us of all this and, also, of a form of temporality we should never have lost; of the importance of moving the point of view down to ground level, which is precisely where most things happen (we should think of Feuerbach, another nineteenth-century man trapped between the material and the spiritual), and of the need to continue randomly conjuring in search of new possibilities for a language which, in its ordinary form – everyday use – is exhausted. This is what it is all about: the dynamic of Ciurana’s work recalls that of the Surrealist poets and the Dadaists, all of them demiurges of the absurd plunged headlong into the transcendental.
