The possibilities of art as social transformer and their interactions with the ideological bases of subjectivity are one of the pillars from which I start my artistic productions. Specialized in painting, I defend the possibility of using classic techniques to make critical and political art, as well as their more traditional poetic uses. I use the content of my images as a vehicle to display debates and issues of contemporary experience.
I investigate painting after its loss of leadership as an essentialist language, and use it as a critical device on documentary representation policies.
For the JCE I´ll show two pieces of the series, pictures that piss me off.
These paintings attempt to make visible the ethical conflicts of standardized representational models, and address conflicts in documentary photography. I review the problems of the photographic medium as a way to represent social conflicts, as being just as full of subjectivity as painting. I try to make clear how its aesthetics can disable the subversive content of a documentary piece.
The main idea comes from the model proposed by Martha Rossler, in which a photograph loses its subversive potential to over-technical or aesthetic virtuosity.
To explain this mechanism I propose a reinterpretation of the Minamata images of Eugene Smith. In the early 60s, W. Eugene Smith, along with his wife Alleen Mioko, denounced in his photographs the human devastation that took place in Minamata (Japan) through the irresponsible growth of the chemical company Chisno, which poured mercury waste into the sea. In this series, Eugene Smith offers a representation of his compassion for the Japanese fishermen contaminated by mercury, rather than a representation of the struggle of the latter to penalize the company that polluted the waters.
The reinterpretation of these images is a copy in oils using an expressionist style, making an analogy between the style of photojournalism and abstract expressionism. Ironically, due to the aesthetic character of these explicit images, the photographs lose their subversive content, as do all pictures that follow the formalist theories of Greenberg. Choosing large format canvases to show the spectacular nature of images destroys the instrumental meaning they took on in the 60’s.
